How to Save Money at the Grocery Store
1) Has a new grocery store opened up in your area within the last year? If one has, it’s almost guaranteed they are promoting with the use use of store coupons. For example there’s a new chain of stores in California that has been distributing coupons for $5 off $20 purchases, every week via mail, to the residents in neighborhoods of new stores. If you live in an apartment building your neighbors often throw this “junk mail” on top of the mailboxes. If you grab their coupons along with your own, you can theoretically save 25% on your purchases at this chain of stores. Obviously not all grocery stores do this, but I can tell you most mail out some sort of promo coupons during the months after they first open their doors.
2) Another little known secret is stores will often slash prices on products that are nearing expiration. We all know produce prices are not cheap. Grocers will often discount fresh fruits and vegetables 50% in the day or two leading up to their expiration. I often buy blueberries this way and only pay $1.50 a package instead of $3.00. This is a great way to make these types of food affordable again. Often their shipment schedules plan on merchandise being gone after the weekends – monday or tuesday. So your best bet is to go shopping on these days to find the unsold merchandise which they need to sell pronto.
3) There are a few credit cards on the market which will give you a rebate on grocery stores. Read any Chase Rewards credit card review to see that this free card most likely will benefit you. It offers 3% rebates on things such as groceries, fast food, drug stores, and many other categories. A great way to save a few extra bucks each week when you’re hitting the supermarkets. There are other cards on the market too. You’re best best is reading reviews on a credit card forum to find which ones will benefit you the most.
Using any of these three methods should help you save some green next time you’re at the store.
