How Healthy is your Cat’s Colon?

colon
When it comes to , cat digestive systems are quite similar to those of humans. Just as with humans, cats can suffer from a number of digestive disorders. In fact, is relatively common in felines. Therefore, as a pet owner, it is important for you to understand how to recognize digestive problems as well as how to help your cat maintain a healthy .

Feline

Concerning , cat is relatively easy to recognize. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to help your cat recover from feline .

Just as with human , cat problems have a great deal to do with the age of the cat. As in humans, older cats are more susceptible to . Those that are eight-years-old and above are more likely to become constipated. Nonetheless, it is possible for a cat of any age to become constipated.

A cat with bowels that are functioning efficiently will usually have one or two bowel movements every day. Of course, just as with humans, every cat is different. Signs of feline include:

No bowel movements, or very infrequent bowel movements

Straining during a bowel movement

Painful bowel movements

A sudden decrease in the amount of stool produced

When it comes to , cat is a sign that something is not working correctly within the digestive tract. And, if you fail to take action, your cat may become quite ill. Signs the has advanced and is becoming serious include:

Failure to keep itself groomed

Lethargic behavior

Loss of appetite

Crouching and hunching up

Vomiting

Passing a small amount of diarrhea, which is runny and blood-tinged

Some potential causes of cat include:

Ingesting foreign bodies, hair, and animal bones

A dirty litter box

Recent hospitalization

Lack of (let your cat out to run)

Obstructions, such as improperly healed pelvic fractures or tumors

Medication

Hair matted with dirt/mud

Injuries from cat fights

Obesity (don’t overfeed your pet please or share your meals)

Parasites, usually obtained from dirt, animals, or unclean water

To maintain proper feline , needs to be treated as soon as possible. The first approach is to address the underlying cause of the problem. A cat that is dehydrated, for example, may receive intravenous or subcutaneous replacement fluids to help encourage a bowel movement.

If a change of the underlying cause is not enough to get things moving again, the veterinarian may administer an enema to your pet to help induce a bowel movement. If the cat is severely constipated, however, it may be necessary to place the cat under anesthesia and remove the feces manually. This can be a very time consuming process.

Feline Obstipation

Feline obstipation is similar to , but must be treated differently. Whereas is characterized by difficulty in eliminating waste, obstipation occurs when the cat’s bowels are blocked and it is unable to pass any waste at all. The cause of obstipation and the signs and symptoms of the disorder are usually the same as with .

Feline Megacolon

A cat that suffers from chronic or obstipation may ultimately develop Megacolon, which is a distended with poor movement. When this occurs, fecal matter remains in the and becomes continuously drier. As a result, the becomes filled with waste almost as hard as concrete.

Maintaining Cat Style

Maintaining your cat’s requires many of the same steps for maintaining the of a human . Placing your cat on a high fiber , for example, will help prevent your cat from becoming constipated. Like humans, cats are unable to digest fiber. As the undigested fiber sits in your cat’s , it absorbs water and helps loosen the stool while also providing it with extra bulk.

Since cats tend to have more sensitive digestive systems than humans, however, it is important to implement a high fiber slowly. Changing your cat’s too abruptly can cause it to experience gas pain. Therefore, you should spend about five or seven days gradually modifying your cat’s .

Foods that can be added to your cat’s to increase its fiber intake include:

Canned pumpkin

Bran

Vegetable meal

Whole grains

Your cat may not want to eat any of these foods alone. Therefore, you will need to mix them in with your cat’s canned cat food. It is also important to ensure your cat drinks plenty of water. This is particularly important when increasing fiber consumption since the fiber will absorb water within your cat’s digestive system.

By helping your pet maintain proper , its digestive problems should not be of serious concern. However, if problems arise, contact your veterinarian right away to take care of the issue before it worsens.

INCIDENCE OF

is more common in industrialized nations and in those societies where red meat is a major part of the , although evidence tends to suggest that merely changing your to white meat and seafood as in for instance Japan, tends to just swap stomach cancer for . In almost all cases is a treatable disease if caught early.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

usually begins with the appearance of benign growths such as polyps. Often there are no early symptoms. If signs and symptoms of do appear, they may include: a change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or or a change in the consistency of your stool for more than a couple of weeks, rectal bleeding or blood in your stool, persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain, abdominal pain with a bowel movement, a feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely, weakness or fatigue and unexplained weight loss.

CAUSES OF

’s exact cause is unknown, but it appears to be influenced by both inherited and environmental factors. Studies show a concentration in areas of higher economic development suggesting a relationship to , particularly excess animal fat and low fiber. Other factors that increase the risk of developing tumors are: age over 40, the presence of other diseases of the digestive tract, history and ulcerative colitis.

Development of at an early age, or at multiple sites, or recurrent , suggests a genetically transmitted form of the disease as opposed to the sporadic form. There also is a slight increased risk for carcinoma in the individual who smokes.

The most common cell type is adenocarcinoma which accounts for 95% of cases.

DIAGNOSIS

The development of polyps of the usually precedes the development of by five or more years. The American Gastroenterologial Association revised its screening guidelines in 2003 to recommend that people with two or more first-degree relatives with colorectal cancer or a first-degree relative with or rectal cancer before age 60 should have a screening colonoscopy beginning at age 40 or beginning 10 years prior to the age of the earlier diagnosis in their (whichever is earliest). Those with a first-degree relative diagnosed with after age 60 or two second-degree relative with or rectal cancer should begin screening at age 40 with one of the methods listed above, such as annual sigmoidoscopy. The most common screening tests are colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and fecal occult blood test.

CT scans and Barium enemas are also routinely used for diagnosis of and rectal cancers.

TREATMENT OF

Almost all tumors are treated with surgery first, regardless of stage. The malignant tumor, adjacent tissues and any lymph nodes that may contain cancer cells are removed.

In , chemotherapy after surgery is usually only given if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes (Stage III). Radiation therapy may also be used to induce tumor regression. As with other cancer treatments, the incidence of side effects varies with patient and the exact nature of the treatment.

PREVENTION

There is not an absolute method for preventing . Still, there are steps an individual can take to dramatically lessen the risk or to identify the precursors of so that it does not manifest itself. People who turn age 50, and all of those with a history of in their families, should speak with their physicians about the most recent screening recommendations from physician and cancer organizations. They should watch for symptoms and attend all recommended screenings to increase the likelihood of catching early. is believed to reduce the risk of . Apparently, no association exists between frequency of bowel movement or laxative use and risk of .

PROGNOSIS

Prognosis depends on the stage of the disease and the overall of the patient. If diagnosed early, before the tumor has spread from the bowel, these treatments are very effective, with about 90% of patients alive five years after diagnosis. If the does not come back (recur) within 5 years, it is considered cured. Prognosis is poor in patients with liver and lung metastases.
