Criteria to Consider when Choosing the Right Conveyor Chain for your Application

The universality of the conveyor chain in various applications from moving vehicles down the line in auto production to the movement of sprinklers in agriculture can be seen around the world. Whenever something must be moved from point “A” to point “B” continuously no matter if it is to be assembled, washed, painted, inspected or heading for storage, you will undoubtedly find a conveyor as the basis of the system.

For optimum performance of a conveyor chain, four criteria are crucial – strength, durability, resistance to fatigue and resistance to impact.

The weight in pounds required to break the chain on a linear plane is the measurement that determines the ultimate strength of the chain. The usual method of testing is by use of a tensile testing machine. The minimum strength values for each size of chain are dictated by ANSI. The material of which the chain is made, its manufacturing process, and hardening specifications used in making its components consisting of center link, side link, and pin are controlled by the manufacturer and determines the strength of the chain.

Although the ultimate strength of any given chain will reflect the integrity of a certain material at a certain hardness, a high ultimate value does not necessarily mean that it is impervious to failure. The ultimate strength value is used for application engineering and deciding what type or size of conveyor chain to be used for various loads.

A conveyor chain’s durability value is the most subjective value to consider when comparing chains. Factors affecting it’s durability are lubrication, loads, chain speed, and system design among others. A manufacturer controls only the hardness factor that impacts the other three criteria. It is a fact that the harder the chain the higher its durability factor but along with this comes a lower resistance to fatigue and impact. The harder the chain the less resistance it becomes to fatigue and impact.

There are different base materials that offer some options. For example, standard SAE 1045 steel at a hardness of 370 offers worthy impact and fatigue resistance, a good degree of durability, and meets minimum ANSI strength requirements. If the same material has a hardness of 420 BHN, its strength and durability would be enhanced but some of its resistance to fatigue and impact would be lost. As an alternative, microtuff-15 micro-alloy steel has good wearability and more strength along with excellent impact and fatigue resistance. It also costs the same as SAE 1045.

What fatigue resistance indicates is the material’s capacity to endure continuous bending, twisting and so forth without breaking apart. This is possibly the conveyor chain’s preeminent asset or liability. The quality of fatigue is not readily quantifiable until the material shows signs of fracture. Modern factories have higher rates of production, heavier overall chain loads, more maze-like chain paths with tighter radius turns, and the chain is more apt to undergo more subtle bending and twisting than in years past

However, there are different materials having the same hardness with variable capabilities of absorbing impact and remaining intact. A chain’s resistance to impact is a factor in many power and free systems.

With loads being stopped and started frequently, the chain, especially the pusher dog, is susceptible to impact failure if it is not manufactured from an impact resistant material. Other potential impact points on a conveyor are the loading and unloading stations. Impact failures, similar to fatigue failures, occur without warning, but unlike fatigue failures, they don’t necessarily multiply.

2 Ways To Make A Ben 10 Cake

Ben 10 is a very popular cartoon character these days and lots of kids want a Ben 10 cake for their birthday. You make the cake yourself, without much cake decorating experience, by using an easy technique to copy a picture you select.

If you’re artistic, you can just draw Ben 10 directly on the top of the cake with any kind of icing or piping gel. Not everyone is confident in their drawing skills, so here are a few ways to create an icing image using any picture you want.

If you don’t already have a picture, you can find one by searching Google images. Save the picture you like to your computer. Using the photo editing tool of your choice, turn your picture into a mirror image. (You’re doing this because the picture will be flipped over when it goes on the cake). When you print out your picture, you’ll want it to fit on your cake, leaving room for any writing or border. Size the picture accordingly.

Begin by taping the picture down to your work surface. Use either the back of a cookie pan, a piece of sturdy cardboard, a cutting board, or other sturdy flat surface. Now tape plastic cling wrap over the picture. Make sure the plastic wrap lays smoothly. Secure it with tape in several spots along the edge so it won’t move while you’re working.

Royal Icing Image: Outline the picture in either white or black thick consistency royal icing using the number 2 cake decorating tip. Allow to set for 30 minutes. To the remainder of the royal icing, add water 1 teaspoon at a time until the icing is the consistency of cream. Use food color pastes to create the different colors you need in separate cups or bowls. Place each color in its own decorating bag with a number 4 cake decorating tip attached. Use one color at a time to fill in each area to match the picture. First pipe within the outlined area, going all the way around. Then pipe in a zig zag motion back and forth until the area is filled. Pop any air bubbles with a toothpick. When done, you can place the runout design under a heat lamp to set it quickly. Or, just put it aside to dry. It may need 24 hours or more. When completely dry, carefully remove the cling wrap from the image and invert the image onto the cake.

Ben 10 in Buttercream Icing: You will prepare the same way as above up to the point of placing the cling wrap over your picture. Use the buttercream icing color of your choice to outline the picture with a #2 tip. Make the rest of your colors in buttercream icing and place them each in their own cake decorating bag. Fill in each section of the picture with a number 4 tip. Begin with the smallest details and end with the larger ones. When the whole picture is filled in, use a spatula to spread a nice thick coat of buttercream icing over the entire image. This icing should be the same color as the one on top of your cake. You should also outline the picture with the same color. This way, when you put the buttercream transfer on the cake, it will look like it was decorated directly on to the cake. Set the buttercream transfer in the freezer. When it’s solid, flip it over where you want it on the cake. Peel back the cling wrap.

Either method is relatively easy and will make your Ben 10 cake picture perfect.

A History – Maple Syrup

It is likely that what is being talked about here isn’t the “waffle syrup” or “pancake syrup” that you keep in your cupboard or fridge. Those most likely are just imitations of genuine maple syrup, simply maple-flavored to please your palate.

You can even freeze food items in clean, plastic margarine tubs if that’s all you have, but the seal isn’t really air-tight so don’t freeze these items for longer than two weeks or the quality of the food will suffer.

It’s important to remember that margarine containers are safe to freeze food in (they’re made of food grade plastic), but don’t reheat your meal in them. They’re not microwave-able, and they can seep harmful chemicals into your family’s food. Be sure that a plastic container is labeled “microwave safe” before using it to reheat food. If you have a choice between round or rectangular freezer containers, choose rectangular. These use space more efficiently and take up less room in the freezer.

So, Why Eat Superfoods? When you look at superfoods as a whole new class of edible items (different from traditional foods and herbs), what are they good for? I have found a way to replace most of the multitude of vitamin and mineral tablets I began adding to every meal 40 years ago. When I began integrating superfoods into my diet, I found that I no longer needed to take so many vitamin pills and other supplements in pill or tablet form. What a relief! Hemp Seed is one such superfood. I began taking hemp seed a few years ago as I was looking for a natural source of Vitamin E. It seemed to do something positive for my nervous system when I ate it. This was before it became available as an organic and raw, extra-virgin coconut oil as found today. Was I ever thrilled to find the more wholesome version many years later. AFA (Aphanizomenom flos-aqua) Blue Green Algae – I first came across this particular blue green algae back in the 1990’s when a network marketing company began distributing it. I was looking for a food that would provide more energy and it certainly did just that! Now there are many more versions of this wonderful superfood. More Familiar Superfoods Cacao Beans – which I learned about through the writings and audio tapes of David Wolfe. It took me a while to get the fact that the chocolate that I ate as a child was different from raw chocolate made from the raw cacao beans. Now raw chocolate treats are a very pleasant part of my daily nutrition program. Maca Root – again, this one I owe to David Wolfe. I don’t eat much of it but it definitely helps to balance hormones of the body. Spirulina – I found this one back in the 1980’s. It’s been around for a long time. I first tried to use it as a protein replacement but that just didn’t work for me. I get a lot of value from it now by mixing a quarter teaspoon a day in my breakfast drink. I mainly use it for the array of vitamins and minerals not found in other foods. Spirulina is definitely very stabilizing. A great drip maker combines the essential brewing elements in a specific way. You need a filter that contains a large amount of fresh grounds for each 6 ounces of coffee brewing. The water should be heated to 195-205 degrees F. The water should be allowed to saturate the grounds gently and thoroughly. The total brew cycle, from start to finish, must take from 4 to 6 minutes. If it takes longer than 8 minutes, the coffee will be over-extracted and bitter.

I personally use zip-top freezer bags for most of my freezer-meal storage needs. Not only do freezer bags take up less space than boxes, the bags are inexpensive and easy to use. It’s important to buy top quality freezer bags – this isn’t the place to cut back, money-wise. There’s nothing worse for a freezer-meal cook than to have your entire batch of frozen meals ruined by poor wrapping or freezer bags breaking. I recommend double bagging anything with a soupy consistency so you don’t end up with a watery mess at the bottom of your refrigerator after the meal thaws. Sometimes bags can develop small holes, or the zip-top can open slightly.

Maple syrup, however, is not just for pancakes. It can be eaten with waffles, oatmeal, French toast, crumpets, and a number of other desserts. It can even be boiled further to make maple candy (maple taffy or sugar on snow), maple sugar, or maple butter, all of which can give you a whole new dining experience when you add even just a dollop of them on your dishes. You can also use disposable aluminum foil pans purchased at the grocery store. These can often be reused several times before needing to be recycled or disposed. Disposable pans are ideal if you’re making meals to use to give to others; the recipient doesn’t need to worry about returning your pan or casserole dish. If clean up is a huge time-consumer, these pans be easily thrown away to make cleanup painless. I’ve built up a good supply of freezer containers by stocking up on bakeware and other freeze-able containers at garage sales and thrift stores. Glass bakeware works fine.
